Abstract: Mine area environment problems have drawn a considerable amount of intentions in various research fields in recent years. In order to investigate the potential biosafety issues within mine area water environment, toxicity of 5 mine area surface water samples around mine areas on Caenorhabditis elegans that was used as an in vivo animal model was studied in Anhui Province Huoqiu Iron Mine Area; both growth and reproductive developments were used as biological endpoints for damage effects determination. The results show that mine area water environment exsited conspicuous damage effects on both growth and reproductive process of Caenorhabditis elegans, and the extent of these damage effects was highly depended on the distance between the water sampling point and the mining spot, as well as the contents of main contaminants within the water samples. The main influencing factors of total iron, soluble iron, copper, chrome and arsenic within water samples on Caenorhabditis elegans toxicology effects was determined through principal component analysis method. This study provide a new technique and approach for monitoring and evaluating mine area ecological and biological safety.
