Review of the Terrestrial Biotic Ligand Model in Predicting Phytotoxicity of Heavy Metals in Soil

Abstract: Terrestrial biotic ligand model (t-BLM) is the application of biotic ligand model (BLM) theory in terrestrial ecosystem, through the quantization of relationship between heavy metal speciation in soil, soil properties and ecological toxicology dose-response. It aims to evaluate the heavy metal toxicity effect to terrestrial organisms. BLM is successful in predicting the toxicity of heavy metals to aquatic organisms, however, the development of t-BLM is relatively slow. Based on the studies of the toxicity of heavy metal to plants, this paper reviewed the recent research progresses in t-BLM, and introduced the principles of t-BLM, the phytotoxicity of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd, etc.) based on t-BLM and their influences. At the end of the paper, it presented the key challenges of this study.
